Scotland’s Munich Takeover: Fans Ready for Euro 2024 Kickoff Against Germany

Scotland supporters are turning Munich into a home away from home as they prepare for their team’s opening match against Germany in the European Championship. The city’s streets are alive with the colors and sounds of the Tartan Army, bringing a festive atmosphere and boosting local businesses.

Scotland’s Tartan Army Invades Munich

In the days leading up to the match, tens of thousands of Scotland fans have arrived in Munich. The city’s streets are filled with the sight of kilts and Scottish flags, and the sound of bagpipes echoes through the air. This overwhelming presence is a rare opportunity for fans, as Scotland hasn’t played a European Championship match abroad since 1992.

A Joyous Atmosphere

Local bars and pubs are thriving as they cater to the influx of Scottish supporters. Despite the large crowds, the atmosphere remains joyous and celebratory, with no reports of trouble. The Tartan Army is making the most of this opportunity to support their team on foreign soil.

Munich’s Main Square Becomes a Scottish Hub

Marienplatz, Munich’s main square, has become a central gathering point for the fans. By mid-afternoon on Friday, the square was so crowded that police had to block off entrances to manage the throng of supporters. Fire engines were also on standby due to the smoke from flares and fireworks, but the overall mood remained relaxed and jubilant.

A Long-Awaited Celebration for Euro 2024

For many Scottish fans, this tournament marks a significant moment. Scotland participated in the pandemic-delayed 2021 European Championship, but the event was held in various countries with travel restrictions in place. Prior to that, the team hadn’t qualified for a major tournament since the 1998 World Cup in France.

“We should all be proud that we’re here,” Scotland coach Steve Clarke said. “It’s been a long time, since 1998, when we actually traveled abroad to be involved in a major tournament like this. That’s why the nation is so excited, I think.”

Fans’ Dedication and Journey in Euro 2024

The Scottish FA estimated in March that 100,000 fans would travel to Germany, but British media is reporting that the actual number might be double that figure. Fans have arrived by various means, including planes, trains, and automobiles. Some even chose more unconventional methods, such as cycling or walking to Germany.

One notable journey was made by 20-year-old Craig Ferguson from Paisley, who walked from Glasgow to Munich over more than 40 days to raise money for charity. Ferguson raised over £62,000 ($79,000) for men’s mental health and suicide prevention.

“It was so worth it,” Ferguson said. “Even for that sort of finish line yesterday, you know, coming in, that’s a moment I’ll never forget. But more importantly, we managed to raise a significant amount for a good cause, and I’d do it all over again just to raise that money.”

Anticipation for the Match

The Scottish team has been inspired by the overwhelming support from their fans. Images and videos of the Tartan Army’s presence in Munich have been circulating, boosting the players’ morale ahead of their challenging match against the host nation, Germany.

Scotland’s fans have turned Munich into a festive Scottish enclave, bringing their passion and support to the European Championship. As they prepare for the opening game against Germany, the Tartan Army’s dedication and joyous spirit are on full display, making this a memorable event for all involved.
